Zsigmond Móricz's novel depicts the Hungarian reality of the twenties and thirties, when the misery of the poor and the determined harassment of the rich took on unprecedented proportions. In this work, Móricz exposes the abuses of the time: corruption, personal-family mergers, fraud disguised in a "legal" framework. His tragicomic protagonist, with the insatiability of a late-arriving thief - but as a champion of truth - tries to circumvent those "more rubbed" than him, which results in his downfall in the midst of a given balance of power. In this novel, Zsigmond Móricz recounted his previous sympathy for some members of the gentry layer.
