Philomena

Piatok Milka was not as holy as Philomena, by whom she was nicknamed, but she was a pure and sincere girl. True, his struggles were different from those of his saint, but they lasted and gradually, insidiously, destroyed the young girl's soul, self-esteem, and last but not least, her body. The girl embarks on a bumpy road from the dire conditions of a mining village. He also seeks to break out of his humiliating position as a maid, woman, wife, and mother, and of a subordinate role involuntarily forced by the men who accompany his fate. Loves, legends, inaccessible spirits, and very vivid figures appear in Philomena’s life. His line of failures accompanies him to his last breath. Although the feminism of female writers of the early twentieth century does not emerge from this novel, the need to present impenetrable barriers between social critique, social problems, and social classes is evident. The then 28-year-old writer won the 1920 competition for Athenaeum Publishing with this book. It was his first novel to conquer the reader with his lyrical language, despite Philomena's bitter life, and to gain recognition among Western writers. In her essay My Room, Virginia Woolf notes that female writers need to develop a narrative that can be specific to women’s novels.
